HIV, Hepatitis Testing Clinic Open Today in North Tulsa

The Tulsa Health Department reports that 420 patients of the Tulsa dentist who may have exposed thousands to diseases were tested at the North Regional Health and Wellness Center today.

Dr. W. Scott Harrington voluntarily stopped practicing after potentially exposing 7,000 patients to HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The Tulsa Health Department is offering free testing to patients at the wellness center located at 5635 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Testing will be provided on a walk-in basis today starting at 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.

Channel 8 spoke with one patient who said she arrived before the testing site opened and spent about two hours waiting.

"I feel worse. I feel very nervous. I feel upset," said Kandyce Shrum, 21. She brought her best friend for support. They said they asked the man drawing Shrum's blood to put on gloves, fearing sanitation issues.

Patients of Harrington who cannot make it to the clinic today can be tested next week starting Monday, April 1 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"We will be there for the long run," said Kaitlin Snider with the Tulsa Health Department. "For weeks, months, whatever it takes to ensure that everyone gets tested."

Snider said those tested will receive their results in two to three weeks.

Read the notification letter sent out to patients of Dr. Harrington since 2007

Those who have received a notification letter should bring their letter to the clinic. All patients of Harrington's dental practice since 2007 will receive notification letters.

The Tulsa Health Department also has a hotline operating from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today and will continue weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Questions about Harrington's dental practice and testing can call 918-595-4500. The Health Department said it received more than 1,000 calls Friday.

Health Department: Possibly 7,000 Patients Exposed To HIV, Hepatitis

Officials said the State Board of Dentistry so far has found numerous violations of health and safety laws and major violations of the State Dental Act.

The Dentistry Board complaint says Harrington and his staff told investigators that a "high population of known infectious disease carrier patients" received dental care from him.
