Collinsville, OK -
A Kansas State University fundraiser and a retired doctor have been identified as two of the victims in Sunday’s plane crash in Collinsville.
Topeka station WIBW is reporting that Kansas State has confirmed that Chris Gruber, the Director of Development for the school’s College of Veterinary Medicine, was killed in the crash.
Family members told WIBW that the plane belonged to and was piloted by Dr. Ronald Marshall, 71, a retired physician from Manhattan. While they have not been notified officially, family members said they’re assuming Marshall also was killed in the crash.
On Monday, officials continued their investigation into what led the plane to crash in a Collinsville neighborhood on Sunday.
The plane slammed into a backyard of an abandoned home, near the intersection 14th & Broadway.
Before it crashed, the distress of the plane drew attention from folks down below.
"We heard a loud thunder, boom," said one man.
"You could tell he was fighting it, engine kept backfiring," said another man.
As the trouble mounted for the pilot, the situation became unmanageable.
"And you could see a couple pieces fly away from the plane, it's like wings had folded in on themselves or something," said one witness.
The impact was felt and seen from considerable distance.
"From almost a block and a half off, I seen the dirt higher than the smoke," said one man.
Fortunately, the house that the plane crashed near was unoccupied, and no one on the ground was injured.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the aircraft is identified as a Mooney M20. They say the plane dropped off radar around 5:52 PM, Sunday Evening.
