Drought Conditions Improve in Oklahoma

Posted: Updated:
A wet start to 2013 is improving our drought conditions. A wet start to 2013 is improving our drought conditions.

Over the last couple of weeks your windshield wipers have probably gotten a good work out. While the rain has made driving a little messy at times, the moisture is exactly what we've needed.

Our drought conditions have improved significantly over the last several months. In the last 4 months, rain gauges all across eastern Oklahoma have collected amounts ranging from 7 to 18 inches-that's 100 to 120 percent of normal.

As of last week our overall drought conditions still existed but had improved dramatically with most of Green Country looking at moderate to severe drought conditions. Right now most of the area is looking at near normal precipitation, but some spots north of Tulsa still need a little more rain.

Even with all the rain the drought isn't over yet. When you look at total rainfall across the state the past year most areas are still running 8-16 inches below normal.

The bottom line we still need more rain and it looks like we may be in luck. The climate prediction center's drought outlook shows improving and easing drought conditions across central and eastern Oklahoma through June.
