Woody Guthrie Center Almost Ready

Posted: Updated:

A center honoring an Oklahoma son is almost ready to open its doors.

The Woody Guthrie Center is in the heart of the Brady Arts District downtown. The construction on the building started in February 2012.

Now, the center is just hours away from opening and there are last minute touches being made. The building is 12,000 square feet and sits at the corner of Brady and Boston.

"We have the audio, we've got visual, all interactive. I can't even describe it. It's just amazing, hits you as soon as you walk in and go up the steps," says Deana McCloud, executive director of the center.

McCloud says there is a little bit of everything in the center. They have all things Woody Guthrie, but there are also several things that talk about Oklahoma and U.S. History. McCloud says that there are two things that visitors should not miss.

"The hand written lyrics of "This Land is Your Land." That exhibit is something that anyone should want to have the opportunity to view. As well as the interactive map that takes you through Woody's travels and the things that were going on in the world and in Oklahoma during that time," McCloud says.

McCloud says the center could take hours to go through because of all the interactive parts. This weekend the center will be free to everyone and there will be concerts at the Guthrie Green both Saturday and Sunday during center hours. McCloud says the center will be changing all the time because they have about ten thousand pieces from the Woody Guthrie archive.

"If you think you know all about Woody, if you think you know all about the Dust Bowl, I will encourage you and challenge you to come here and see if you can't learn something new," McCloud says.

The Woody Guthrie Center opens Saturday, April 27th. It will be open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There will also be book signings and panel discussions in the theater inside the center.
