Anonymous Donation Pays Homage to Late Community Activist
Tulsa Community College is one step closer to making the proposed Nate Waters Physical Therapy Clinic a reality.
An anonymous donor pledged $157,500 for a matching grant to go toward completion of the stand-alone clinic at the 815 S. Cincinnati site. The donor issued a challenge to the community, including Waters' friends, co-workers, and associates to raise the remaining funds.
Nate Waters, a TCC graduate who died last month, worked closely with the TCC Physical Therapist Assistance program as a quadriplegic. He raised awareness for people with physical disabilities as an activist and community volunteer.
"This is about a very special man. Nate embodied service to others and led by humility and grace and this building ensures his legacy of helping others," said Tulsa Community College Foundation Board Chair Mary Shaw. Shaw, who was a close friend of Waters, said, "He would never have expected this outpouring of love and support from the community and I hope Nate's spirit lives on through this project."
To date, TCC and private investors have contributed $1.6 million for the project, with major donors including St. Francis Health System, Morningcrest Healthcare Foundation, Founders of Doctors' Hospital, Osteopathic Founders Foundation, Hille Foundation, Grace and Franklin Bernsen Foundation, and Suzanne Reese. The TCC Foundation still needs to raise $157,500 in private funds to qualify for the matching grant. The project is expected to cost around $2 million to complete.
