Earlier this week Mayor Dewey Bartlett had to present his budget proposal to the City Council.
Former Mayor Bill LaFortune says he doesn't envy Bartlett.
LaFortune says putting together the budget is one of the toughest jobs as mayor. He adds, it's difficult to pass off politically unpopular budget proposals while running for re-election.
"The difference between federal government and city and state is... we have to balance our budgets and maintain a healthy reserve as well so our credit rating is protected. It's required by law. You can't kick the can down the road."
