18-Month Old Dies as a Result of Child Abuse

Posted: Updated:

A Tulsa man is facing a 1st degree murder charge after his girlfriends daughter dies in a Tulsa hospital this morning.

19-year-old Heidi Benjamin and her live-in boyfriend 24-year-old Scott Bolden were arrested Wednesday after paramedics were called out to their home, 6911 E. Marshall Pl., to treat the woman's 18-month-old daughter.

The toddler was found unconscious.

Police were notified after paramedics discovered bruises on her chest, stomach and both legs, as well as a head injury.

Neither could explain how she got those injuries. The girl's mother said they did not call for help until the child was unresponsive and they couldn't revive her.

"It's very disappointing that someone would do that to a small child. Children are left in adult care for protection so it's very disturbing when you have someone that would injure a child," says Tulsa Police Officer Leland Ashley.

According to the police report, doctors say the injuries could not be caused by normal childhood activities and were intentionally inflicted by an adult.

Both are being held in the Tulsa County Jail. Benjamin's bond is set at 100,000 dollars for permitting child abuse and child abuse. Bolden is being held for two charges of child abuse by injury and an additional charge of 1st degree murder was added today.
