Tulsans Celebrate Cinco de Mayo... But What Does It Actually Mean?

Posted: Updated:

Tulsans celebrated Cinco de Mayo Sunday across Green Country. El Guapo's Cantina blocked off Elgin between 1st and 2nd Streets for a two night party.

Channel 8 spoke with many attendees who either thought Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May) celebrates Independence Day for Mexico or did not know. However, it actually celebrates The Battle of Puebla, in which Mexico defeated France.

"A lot of people think it's the celebration of Independence Day for Mexico, but it's actually a battle that the Mexicans won against the French in 1862," said El Guapo's General Manager Mark Sheffield.

Many Americans celebrate the holiday by honoring certain elements of Mexican culture. Many also celebrate with drinking.

"We are a nation who likes to imbibe," said one person celebrating.

"I think people just like to drink adult beverages to be honest," said Sheffield. "They like to find any reason to go out and celebrate and have fun and loosen up and relax. Life's hard these days and you need those special times to feel good about yourself and live in general."

El Guapo's event runs until 10 p.m. Sunday night with live music and drinks. Organizers said the cooler weather affected attendance Saturday but hopes to see as many people as last year. That number was around 1,500 people.
