Henryetta Police: Suspect Maneuvers Out of Handcuffs, Steals Canine Unit

Posted: Updated:

A 39-year-old man is in custody Friday morning after Henryetta officers say he maneuvered his way out of handcuffs and drove off with a police car.

Henryetta Police arrested Williams Brooks Friday morning after officers received calls that he was trespassing in a neighborhood on the north side of town. Brooks also was discovered under the influence of drugs.

HPD Chief Steve Norman told KTUL that when the officer placed him in the car and returned to the neighborhood to finish the investigation, Brooks managed to move his arms under his legs and took off with the police unit and canine in the backseat.

Brooks reportedly drove about a mile and a half from the scene until he parked the car on the side of the road and fled into a wooded area. Officers located the vehicle and set up a perimeter with the help of Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Norman said that officers were able to track Brooks and placed him into custody once more. He also said that there was no damage reported on the vehicle and the canine was safe.

Brooks is now awaiting his transfer to the Okmulgee County Jail.
