Drillers Set A New World Record

Posted: Updated:

The Drillers and the Walk to End Alzheimer's have broken a world record for the most first pitches thrown before a baseball game.

The previous record, 11,600 pitches, was broken mid-morning at Strike Out ALZ Presented by Montereau as volunteer Joe Morgan of Oklahoma Methodist Manor sailed a strike over home plate at ONEOK Field. Shortly after, Hornsby threw pitch number 12,000, meeting the Walk to End Alzheimer's goal for setting a new world record.

"We are thrilled at Tulsa's response to both our and the Driller's first attempt to break a world record," said Lindsay Jordan, senior director of development for the Oklahoma Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. "Unfortunately, Alzheimer's disease is constantly breaking records; our incidence numbers have rise 68% in the past 10 years. Today is about breaking a new kind of record and raising awareness for a disease that affect more than 74,000 Oklahomans and their caregivers every day."

Pitching will continue throughout the afternoon until 5pm. Drillers staff and Walk to End Alzheimer's volunteers now plan to run up the score on their record to ensure that it isn't easily broken. The public is invited to ONEOK Field to pitch toward the new world record any time before 5pm. A donation is suggested, but there is no cost to pitch.

The Drillers will take on the Frisco Roughriders at 7pm this evening in limited edition, purple Walk to End Alzheimer's jerseys as Strike Out ALZ Presented by Montereau continues. These jerseys will be up for auction through the 8th inning and all proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer's Association.

As of 2:30pm, Saturday, May 25, the Drillers and the Walk to End Alzheimer's were on pace to set a new world record between 15,000 and 16,000 first pitches thrown before a baseball game.

The Walk to End Alzheimer's Night fund Alzheimer's care, support and research.
