City of Bixby Has Emergency Alert System in Place

Posted: Updated:

The City of Bixby is making sure their residents and businesses are staying informed. Today they launched their Blackboard Connect Emergency Notification system. Bixby residents will get an alert if something is happening in your area.

7,000 landline phones have already been put into the system. Since many families do not have a landline, those residents will need to sign up personal mobile devices. The messages you will get may have to do with tornado warnings, water line breaks, Amber Alerts, street closures or community outreach events.

Some local businesses are excited about the alerts so they can stay informed.

"I have as many as 40 people working here at one time and if we can get an alert that tells us what's going on we are better informed about our surroundings," President and CEO, Doc's Food Stores, Inc., Jim Brown said.

Doc's Country Mart has been in Bixby since 1946. Brown said many residents will call the store when they see something happen in the area to find out what they know. Now it will save them a call since they will get the information sent immediately to their phones.

With these alerts you decide if you want them to come in phone calls, texts, or emails. Residents can also decide on what type of information will be sent. The City of Bixby said they won't over use this system and will only notify you of important things or specific areas.

"This gives us the ability if we have a broken water main to zone in on that particular block and make calls specifically to that neighborhood," Bixby City Manager, Doug Enevoldsen said.

You will be able to opt out if you don't like receiving the alerts. However the city encourages you to sign up your family. Even if you just have a loved one in the area you can sign up for the alerts.

If you need more information, clink on the link and find the Blackboard Connect button on the right side of the screen.
