Strong Reactions to Supreme Court's Rulings

Posted: Updated:

It was a fond farewell, as the Equality Center marked the end of Prop 8 and DOMA with tiny tombstones.

"First of all, we're shocked, we're shocked they ruled so favorably," said director Toby Jenkins.

Figurines on the tops of the cakes, a sign of optimism that gay marriage may one day be in Oklahoma's future as well.

"We know it's just going to take some time to be able to come to the place, where they see things from a justice point of view, and an equality point of view," said Jenkins.

One person who may help them get there...

"I've always liked to help people out," said 13 year-old Noah Blatt, an intern at the center.

"Well, right now, I'm designing a t-shirt that says "I'd hate to be a hater" and I'm going to wear it at the next gay pride parade," he said.

Of course, not everybody was excited by the court's ruling.

"Well, I think it continues to be our morals, our values continue to erode in our country," said Pastor Rocky Harrill of Tulsa Baptist Temple.

"I hate to see it because marriage has always been defined between that of a man and a woman all through history, and now we're changing the definition of what marriage is, and I hate to see that," he said.

"I'll tell you right now, the bible says a whole lot of stuff about relationships and love and marriage that does not look anything like one man for one woman till the day they die," said Jenkins.

Raised it up off of me and I come up with this hand this arm hanging straight down, this one down.
