Free ID Tags For Pets, Discounted Micro chipping

Posted: Updated:

This weekend, the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals is offering free ID tags for pets.

Animal experts say more pets are lost during the 4th of July than any other time of year.

That's because pets get scared of the loud fireworks and run away. Melissa Abernathy is part of the organization and says even if you don't notice fireworks around, your pet might. Also, pets can get lost in the shuffle of lots of people coming and going

"We always think that we got them on a leash, we got them in the house, we got them in a fenced yard, but they get scared, there's a hole in the fence you don't know about, and this helps them find their way home," Abernathy says.

She says people are more people be likely to pick up an animal that has tags because they think, "Oh, I can help you find your way home," Abernathy says.

A proper tag needs to have your cell phone number on it, that way, people will be able to get in touch with you, even if you're out of town.

Abernathy says you do not have to put your address on the tag. Tags have limited space, so putting the phone number only will make it large, visible to both older people and people reading the tag in the dark.

Abernathy says to protect your pet from anything you would protect a toddler from, whether that's food, fireworks or any part of the holiday celebrations. Also, find a quiet place for your animal to be able to get away from the commotion.

The Humane Society of Tulsa is offering microchips for $20. That's a device that's about as big as a grain of rice and has all your information on it. If your pet gets lost, a veterinarian can scan to get your name and phone number to make sure your pet finds its way back home.

If you're interested in the free ID tag, just go to the Oklahoma Alliance for Pets Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. They're located at 1822 E. 15th Street, Suite B in Tulsa.

The Humane Society of Tulsa is located at 6232 E. 60th Street near 61st and Sheridan.
