Let freedom ring with lots of celebrations on Independence Day

Posted: Updated:

Put on your Red, White, and Blue and get ready to celebrate Independence Day in central Alabama! There will be no shortage of fireworks displays, or "grand illuminations" if you prefer the term used by our forefathers!

ABC 3340 and the city of Hoover are hosting Freedom Fest this Fourth of July at the Hoover Met. The gates open at 5:00 PM with plenty of free and convenient parking. Come enjoy music, a kids zone, and, of course, a huge 20 minute fireworks show at 9:00 PM. Again, Freedom Fest is free to the public.

In Shelby county, at the American Village in Montevallo, veterans and active military get in free for "Independence Day 1776", as do children under age four. The cost is five dollars for everyone else. Gates open at 11:00 am and the evening culminates with a fireworks display at "twilight's last gleaming."

Birmingham's annual celebration, Thunder on the Mountain will again light up the sky over Vulcan park. The park is open Thursday until 6:00 PM. It will close for safety purposes. The best places to watch the fireworks show are from Birmingham's Five Points South, the UAB campus, and downtown Homewood. The fireworks show begins at 9:00 PM.

The city of Homewood will have its July 4 celebration beginning at 5:30 PM, when the streets in the downtown area will be closed to traffic. Admission is free, but to ride and play on the attractions, you must purchase a $10 unlimited attractions wristband- the money goes to the Homewood High School band.

In the mood for some patriotic music; consider the UAB Summer B's Independence Day concert. It will take place on the lawn at Bartow Arena. Plan to bring a blanket, picnic, and lawn chair and enjoy this annual patriotic concert before the fireworks.

Trussville Freedom Celebration is set for the Fourth of July on the mall in historic downtown Trussville. The fun begins at 6:00 PM and culminates with a fireworks display at 9:00 that evening.

In Tuscaloosa, get ready for the third annual  "Celebration on the River. " The Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra will put on a concert at 8:00 PM. There are activities for the entire family beginning as early6 as 6:00 PM The celebration ends with a fireworks show at 9:00 PM. General admission tickets are $5 with a Family-4-Pack available for $15. Children under five get in free.

In east Alabama, there is the all-day Freedom Festival at Oxford Lake park, with a fireworks display at 9:00 PM.

Gadsden will put on its annual Fourth of July fireworks display over the Coosa river. See it Thursday evening starting at 9:00 o'clock.
