Birmingham bars, nightclubs to comply with safety ordinance

Posted: Updated:

Security issues at Birmingham bars and nightclubs have led to a new ordinance. The city adopted the Kevin Felder Ordinance in May. The ordinance is named after a man who was killed at a night club in 2009.

Now businesses must comply with the new rules. Some of the guidelines include having surveillance cameras on venue property, staffing at least one security guard for every 150 people after 10 p.m. and creating a safety plan. Councilor Johnathan Austin says he has heard from several business owners asking for guidelines of compliance.

All nightlife business owners must provide their safety plan to the Birmingham Police Department.
