The kids are out of school, and you and the family are getting out of town for few days for a well-deserved vacation. Here are some things to keep in mind before hitting the road. The experts at Credit.com say these tips can help you from getting ripped of while you are out of town.

Don't forget to Put a hold on your mail.

Don’t Just depend on family or friends to get it for you. Many times, they will forget. If you let the mail build up that just signals you're not home to every thief in town. You can file a hold online or at your post office. If you get the paper, make sure to do the same.

Be smart when using your computer, tablet and smartphone.

Don't check important websites - like email, banking or credit accounts - on public computers or wifi systems. It's pretty easy for thieves to steal your password and hijack your email and and financial info. If you need to check those sites, make sure you are using an encrypted internet connection.

Don't post about your journey in real time online.

A lot of people use social media to let their friends go along for the ride. But if your entire network knows you're not home, someone could use that information to break into your house. Just wait until you get back home.

Make digital copies of passports, visas, driver's licenses and health insurance cards for yourself and everyone traveling with you.

Save those copies on an encrypted thumb drive or an encrypted online account in the cloud. If you lose your documents en route, the cloud or thumb drive will be the fastest and most secure way to access whatever you need to authenticate yourself.

After you've taken a trip, be sure to review your credit card and bank statements for the next several months.

Watch out for unexplained charges or suspicious activity. In many cases, when you pay restaurant or hotel bills with credit cards, workers can copy your account numbers without your knowledge. If that happens, you will still have your cards, and you may not immediately realize that it's happened. Thieves who steal credit card numbers may also not charge items right away.
