In spite of the extreme heat, dozens of runners got together to kick off their training for the Route 66 Marathon.
It's taking place on Sunday, November 24, but running experts say now is the time to get serious if you want to take part.
So, area runners and walkers gathered Monday night for The First Mile, which was more of a fun run.
"Just go out and get excited about kicking off the training," says Bart Yasso of Runner's World. "Then a big party afterwards, free food, free beer, a waterslide, a band, really just creating the excitement."
Yasso has been running marathons for 35 years.
Besides weight loss and health benefits, he says running is growing into a social sport where participants often become close friends.
