A six-game homestand for the Tulsa Drillers ended Monday night in much the same way it began. The Drillers got another solid outing from a starting pitcher, but they again struggled to generate much offense. The result was a 4-2 loss to Corpus Christi.
The loss was the sixth straight for the Drillers, matching a season high. The defeat also left them winless on the homestand that included three games against the Hooks and three against San Antonio. Last week, Tulsa went 5-1 during a six-game road trip against the same two teams.
The Drillers compiled a .169 batting average during the stand and scored a total of only nine runs in the six losses.
Monday's finale featured a pitching matchup of former college teammates. Tulsa's Chad Bettis and Corpus Christi's Bobby Doran were teammates at Texas Tech in 2010, and both pitched well. Bettis allowed one run on three hits and one walk in five innings of work. The right-hander also registered eight strikeouts.
Doran surrendered two runs and four hits in ix innings. He walked two batters and also struck out two while improving his record to 7-2.
Bettis was charged with the loss, dropping his record to 2-4.
Max Stassi gave Corpus Christi a lead it would not relinquish with his fifth home run of the season to lead off the third inning. The solo shot was the first hit of the game for either team, and it gave the Hooks a 1-0 lead.
The teams traded two-run homers in the sixth. For the Hooks, Jonathan Meyer singled off Joe Gardner with one out, and Preston Tucker followed with his second home run of the year.
Kyle Parker pulled the Drillers back to within 3-2 with his 13th home run in the bottom half of the inning.
Joey Wong singled in front of the opposite-field drive from Parker that just cleared the glove of Tucker in front of the right field fence.
Tucker struck again in the ninth off reliever Isaiah Froneberger with his second homer of the night to account for the game's final run. It was the first run allowed by Froneberger since May 18. It was also the only hit the lefthander allowed in three innings, his longest outing of the season.
Three Corpus Christi relievers combined to allow only one hit in three innings. Jorge De Leon worked a quick, 1-2-3 ninth to collect his third save of the season.
Tulsa will enjoy a day off before beginning a four-game series with Arkansas Wednesday night in Little Rock. Sean Gallagher (4-2, 1.76 ERA), who was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday, will pitch the opener for the Drillers against former Drillers hurler Brandon Hynick (7-3, 2.85 ERA). First pitch at Dickey Stephens Park is scheduled for 7:10PM.
