Broken Arrow Declares Water Emergency After 24-Inch Main Breaks

Posted: Updated:

City leaders have declared a water emergency in Broken Arrow after a 24-inch water main broke early Thursday morning, flooding an intersection and forcing street closures.

It was around 5 a.m. when a resident saw water spewing from a lawn in the area of 9th (Lynn Lane) and Kenosha and called an off-duty police officer who then alerted others nearby.

Crews shut down the intersection for about half an hour while the water main was shut off and water was able to drain off the streets.

A mandatory water rationing order is in effect as of 8:45 a.m. Thursday.

Residents are being asked to use water for essential use only, i.e. cooking and bathing.

City pools and splash pads will be closed until further notice and Battle Creek Golf Course will cease watering any nonessential portions of course until the repair is complete.

"We are asking our residents to curb water use for the next several hours to allow City crews to repair the line," said Acting Director of Communications Norm Stephens. "While water is still being distributed citywide, storage in the water tanks is low."

Crews have isolated the break and are now working on repairs, which are expected to take between six to eight hours to complete.

Last month, the break of a water main line into Broken Arrow from Pryor forced a three-day water emergency, which included the closure of area restaurants and a boil order notice for all residents.
