Candlelight Vigil For Trayvon Martin Held In Tulsa

Posted: Updated:

Tulsa community members hosted a candlelight vigil Tuesday night in response to the verdict in the Trayvon Martin murder trial in Florida.

The neighborhood watchman who shot and killed him was found not guilty Saturday night.

On Tuesday, dozens gathered at the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park on 415 N. Detroit for the "Candlelight Vigil For Racial Healing."

Participants wore black in memory of the 17-year-old shooting victim.

Many believe the verdict is dividing our country and this event focused on peace and healing.

"The goal here today is to really have a process through which people can come together across those lines of race and difference that too often keep us divided in our community," says Mana Tahaie, YWCA Director of Racial Justice. "Really transcend those together, demonstrate solidarity, and community with one another and go through this healing process together"

Participants were told to not bring signs so it could remain a peaceful discussion.
