One In Hospital, Another In Jail After Officer-Involved Shooting

Posted: Updated:

A teenaged suspect is hospitalized and another in jail after officer-involved shooting and standoff.

The drama began Sunday evening when two suspects allegedly held up the U-Stop near Mohawk and Lewis Avenue in north Tulsa.

Tulsa police spokesperson Leland Ashley said the young men came in with guns, and demanded cigarettes and cash.

From there, the two ran across the street and into a unit at Mohawk Manor Apartments.

Police learned the suspects were still inside and continued to make announcements for their surrender.

Minutes later, a boy in his late teens came out of the apartment holding a handgun. Officers told him to drop the gun several times, but he didn't listen.

Officer Ashley said the teen went back inside, and came back out several more times before the situation escalated.

He came out, and began walking toward officers. Police told him one more time to drop the gun. He didn't, and appeared to be raising it to them, Ashley said.

A pair of Tulsa officer fired their guns at the teen, but only one bullet hit him in the chest.

He was rushed to an area hospital. At last check, the 17-year-old is still in surgery.

The second suspect, Juan Alvarez, stayed in the apartment during the ordeal. He finally surrendered about an hour later when special-operations officers fired chemicals into the apartment.

20-year-old Alvarez was arrested and booked into the Tulsa County Jail on charges of armed robbery and larceny.

He is being held on a $50,500 bond.

No officers were injured.
