Immunizations For Pre-Teens are New Requirements

Posted: Updated:

School begins within just a few weeks for most students. But some students will be turned away because of immunizations. If you have an 11 or 12 year old, they need at least one more shot.

It's a new requirement and many parents haven't heard until now, near enrollment time.  In 2011, the state health department started requiring all 7, 8 and 9th graders to have a new booster, called a DTaP. It is to prevent Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Whooping Cough.

Before children can enter the next grade many of them will need shots--that includes preschoolers, elementary students and older ones.

"I know a lot of times parents think, 'I don't want to have to go get their shots'  it's sad for us for parents to have to hold a four year old and make them get vaccine but you have to realize you are doing it for a very good reason," explained Tina Pyeatt of the Caring Foundation.

Students are required to have the booster in 7th, 8th and 9th grades but can received it as early as 11 years of age.

Remember the health department does not give free immunizations the way they used to. If you have insurance, you may come out cheaper, going to your personal doctors.
