Update, Saturday 1:15 p.m.: The boil order that was established Friday evening has been lifted after follow-up tests showed no evidence of E. coli bacteria, according to the City of Jenks' website.
In the statement, City officials stated that they "...expected precautionary measures taken by businesses, including restaurants, to be lifted by the Tulsa City-County Health Department." The website states that after a second test, the water was flushed and a third sample was taken.
The Tulsa Health Department issued a statement stating that restaurants and businesses could reopen, but should follow certain procedures listed below.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR POST-BOIL ORDER
· Flush the building water lines and clean faucets screens, water lines strainers on mechanical dishwashing machines
· Purge all water using fixtures and appliances, such as ice machines, beverage makers, hot water heaters, etc. Clean and sanitized all fixtures, sinks and equipment connected to waterlines
More Specific Details
· Cold Water Faucets: Run tap water until the water feels cold, 1 minute or more, before drinking, tooth brushing, or using for food preparation.
· Hot Water Faucets: To clear hot water pipes and water heater of untreated water, turn on all hot water faucets and flush for a minimum of 15 minutes for a typical household 40-gallon hot water tank and 30 minutes for an 80-gallon hot water tank or larger. Never use water from the “hot” faucet for drinking, cooking, or other internal-consumption purposes. After this flushing, hot water is then safe to use for washing hands, and for hand washing of dishes, pots and pans, etc.
· Refrigerators: Water dispensers from refrigerators should be flushed by at least one quart of water.
· Dishwashers: After flushing hot water pipes and water heater, run dishwasher empty one time.
· Ice cubes: Automatic ice dispensers should be emptied of ice made during the boil order. Then, discard ice made over an additional 24 hour period to assure complete purging of the water supply line.
Update, Friday, 10 p.m.: Water has been sent to labs to be retested, however tests could take up to 18 hours. People who received their water from the city of Jenks are urged to boil there water prior to any use. All Jenks restaurants have been closed pending test results.
The City of Jenks has issued a boil order for residents and has asked food establishments to cease operations after a presence of E. coli was found in the water.
The Oklahoma Department of Environment Quality advised the city that a presence of E. coli was found in Jenks water.
Water used in food preparation, dish washing and brushing teeth should be brought to a complete boil for at least one minute.
Retail food establishments may continue selling packaged food, but fountain drinks must be discontinued. After the advisory is lifted and restaurants return to service, water systems must be flushed, ice supplies discarded and all food contact equipment must be washed, rinsed and sanitized before use.
Information for Food Establishments provided by the Tulsa Health Department:
-Drinking Water: Use bottle water only; Post "Do Not Drink" signs or disconnect water fountains.
-Previously prepared foods must be discarded.
-Ice produced before the time of the boil order must be discarded and the water shut off to ice machines. Once the order is lifted, all machines must be flushed, cleaned and sanitized before use.
-Beverage machines that use water must be removed from operation. Water used for coffee and tea must use bottled water. No post-mix fountain dispensed drinks can be used.
-Only bottled water can be used to wash fruits and vegetables. Only bottled water may be used for food preparation.
-Boiled or bottle water must be used to wash hands. It must be dispensed from a container with a spigot.
-Dish washer machines may not be used during advisory.
-Single service eating and drinking utensils may be used.
-Dipper wells must have utensils removed and use must be discontinued.
-Hand wash stations must be established for each restroom.
-Grocery stores must shut off misters in produce department and deli-type operations.
