Fairmont Terrace: Mother of Murdered Twins Reflects

Posted: Updated:

It was a shocking, brutal, heart wrenching scene. And Charon Powell knows exactly how long ago it happened.

"It's been seven months and eleven days," said Charon Powell.

That was the day her twin daughters Rebeika and Kayetie were murdered.

"They came into the world together and they left the world together," she said.

In the months since, sometimes simply getting through the day can be a challenge.

"Every morning I get up and I ask the good Lord for the serenity to accept the things I can't, I ask him to strengthen my broken heart, and to strengthen the broken heart of my grandson," she said.

She's raising Rebeika's son, who has weekly sessions in trauma therapy. With his birthday just around the corner, she's worried how she'll handle that day without her daughter.

"I don't know, that's one day that I do not look forward to and I have thought about. I don't know how I'm going to do it. You know, because I want to be happy for him, and how is he going to take it? You know what I mean? How is he going to take it without his mommy?," she said.

Helping her through the pain is the ongoing contact she has with her daughters' friends.

"I continue to have their friends close to me, they continue to call me, which makes me feel a closeness to my girls, by through their friends," she said.

The pain of a mother's loss, only surpassed by a grandmother's duty.

"I know that I have to make it for my grandson and my granddaughter, and I have to be strong for them," she said.
