A 4-year-old girl was identified Wednesday afternoon after being run over by an SUV outside a west Tulsa school.

The girl, Emmalee Halstead, was in the parking lot at Park Elementary School, 3205 West 39th Street, when she was hit by the vehicle at about 3 p.m. as school was getting out.

Authorities said Halstead was walking with her mother to pick up a sibling from school when she broke away and stepped off the curb. The SUV was turning into the school driveway and hit the 4-year-old. Police and Tulsa Public Schools said initial reports suggest there was not much the driver could have done to prevent the tragedy.

Tulsa Public Schools officials said grief counselors were on-site and will be at the campus on Wednesday.

Police and school officials urged parents to be careful in school zones and driveways.

Dr. Keith Ballard, Superintendent at Tulsa Public Schools, released the following statement:

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the 4-year-old girl who was hit by a car in front of Park Elementary this afternoon. This is truly a tragedy for everyone involved and all of Tulsa Public Schools grieves when such a young life is taken away.

"Our hearts and prayers also go out to the driver and family of the vehicle, as this was an unfortunate accident. While we believe there is little that could have been done to prevent this tragedy, we want to urge drivers to be cautious when driving near schools and crosswalks. They need to give their full attention to the road and be mindful of children and their surroundings at all times.

“No words will ever be enough to express the deep sorrow we experience at the loss of this young child.”

Channel 8 spoke with Angelia Broomhall who has a child at Park Elementary. She said it was her best friend driving the SUV. She said her friend was there to pick up her son and Broomhall's daughter from school and is a safe person.

"I'm very sorry, and I will say that on her behalf of her and her family," Broomhall said.

Correction: Police initially said the girl was 3 years old and now say the girl was 4.
