Tulsa Marking 50th Anniversary Of MLK's "I Have A Dream"

Posted: Updated:

From Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles Tuesday, America marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech.

He delivered it from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, during the historic March On Washington back On August 28th, 1963. President Barack Obama will stand in the same spot King stood as part of a special anniversary service.

Tulsans aren't letting the day pass without celebrations of their own.

A Let Freedom Ring ceremony will happen Tuesday afternoon at the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park on north Detroit in Downtown Tulsa. The event begins at 2:30pm.

It will include music, excerpts from King's speech and stories from Tulsans who marched with MLK.

Event organizers say the country has come along way thanks to King's efforts, and that the leaders of tomorrow - Tulsa's children - must keep moving forward.

The ceremonies will wrap up with the sound of bells ringing from churches in downtown and midtown.

Tulsa is also the proud home of the second largest Martin Luther King memorial parade, held in January. It comes in just behind Houston Texas.
