A Broken Arrow couple is behind bars, charged with child neglect, after police said they were smoking pot while driving with their 20-month old child in the vehicle.
21-year-old Romanka Hankins was stopped just before midnight on Hwy. 51 on Tuesday, after an officer said he saw her going about 40 mph in a 65 mph zone and unable to stay in one lane.
According to a booking report, an officer said he noticed all windows down on the vehicle as he approached it with "a large amount of smoking coming from within the vehicle."
"The smoke had the odor of burnt marijuana and was in large quantities billowing from the car," the report stated.
Police said when Hankins' passenger and father of the child in the car, Camoron Smith, asked the officer why the records check was delayed, he told them was waiting on backup before searching the vehicle for pot, to which Smith reportedly replied, "Well, it is right here."
Police said he then opened the glove compartment and took out a partially burnt marijuana cigarette.
Hankins also later told police that she had smoked pot earlier, was smoking while in the car with her minor child present, and had had "a few drinks" before driving.
Hankins was arrested on a charge of child neglect, possession in the presence of a minor child, driving under the influence and traffic violations.
She is being held on bonds totaling more than $56,000.
Smith, 21, was charged with child neglect and possession in front of a minor child. He has a bond of $30,000.
Their 20-month old child was in a car seat in the back seat of the vehicle, the report stated.
