Oklahoma ranks 4th in the nation for teen pregnancy. Tulsa Public School administrators believe that a sex education and health curriculum could help bring the number of teen pregnancy down.
The program would go into four schools including Clinton Middle School, Webster High, Memorial Junior and Senior High. Students would learn about abstinence, sexually transmitted diseases and about how to protect themselves.
The Personal Responsibility Education Program, from the Tulsa Health Department would teach these children about protecting themselves and forming healthy relationships. The Tulsa health department has offered it in summer school the last two years. Now the district would like other students to be a part of it. Students in the 7th, 9th and 11th grades would meet 8 times during school hours. Parents would have to sign their children up, to be a part of it.
This year 63 TPS students took a survey. and 43-percent admitted they were sexually active. Administrators say students need to be properly informed, before they ask their friends.
"And what this is absolutely curriculum. This is what it is, and this is what can happen. This will prepare you, those type of things," explained Steve Mayfield in charge of Student Services for Tulsa Public Schools.
If the school board approves it, the program would start in October.
