Officials are trying to determine which chemicals are involved in a now-contained fire sparked at a hazardous waste plant Thursday morning.

Around 9:45 a.m., the Berryhill Fire Dept. received a call for assistance in the 2700 block of S. 25th West Ave. at EQ Oklahoma.

They found a variety of chemicals involved when they arrived, officials said.

TFD and TFD Hazmat teams were called in for backup.

The company processes hazardous materials and renders them safe fore disposal, according to Michael Baker, the Dir. of Emergency Medical Services for Tulsa Fire Dept.

"Right now, the product is releasing a white, kind of pungent, irritating smoke that is fairly contained to the facility," Baker said.

Baker said fire crews, along with representatives from the company, are now trying to determine which chemicals are involved and how to handle the situation.

Officials evacuated nearby residents and a portion of 33rd W. Ave. south of 21st St. as a precaution.

"It can be really unpleasant to smell this product and right now, we're still gathering information on any potential risk," Baker said. He said there is not a large threat at this point.

There were about 15 people on site at the facility and there were no injuries reported.
