The couple who adopted a 4-year-old Cherokee girl from Oklahoma say they are overjoyed to bring Veronica back to their home in South Carolina.
The couple issued in a statement Tuesday afternoon, just hours after being reunited with Baby Veronica after a lengthy custody dispute with the child’s biological father.
The biological father, Dusten Brown, handed Veronica over to Matt and Melanie Capobianco around 7:30 p.m. on Monday after the Oklahoma Supreme Court suspended a temporary court order granting him custody.
“Nearly 21 months ago, we vowed to do everything legally possible to reunite our family,” the Capobiancos said in a statement. “While we are overjoyed to bring Veronica home, we sympathize with the Brown family during this difficult time.”
Dusten Brown, Cherokee nation member, won custody of Veronica under the Indian Child Welfare Act when his daughter was 2 from the Capobiancos.
The U.S. Supreme Court later ruled this summer law didn't apply, and the Capobiancos were finalized as her adoptive parents.
The Capobiancos have been able to visit with Veronica since then while trying to resolve the custody dispute.
“We are grateful that the visits we’ve enjoyed with our daughter allowed us to reconnect as a family and ease her transition home,” the statement read. “We are all doing well and our focus now is on healing and getting our life back to normal. While we recognize there are many who have taken a strong interest in Veronica’s case, we ask for privacy during this precious time with our daughter.”
As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, it was unknown if the family had made it back to South Carolina yet.
