Study: 500,000 Oklahoma Students, Teachers Not Safe from Tornadoes

A survey released today shows that more than half a million students and teachers at Oklahoma schools are not protected from tornadoes like the one that destroyed two schools in Moore earlier this year.

The study was released by Rep. Joe Dorman (D-Rush Springs) as part of a legislative study on school shelters.

The survey found that 695 schools do have some type of shelter area. The remaining 1,109 schools lack a safe area.

“It is absolutely unacceptable that Oklahoma lawmakers have failed to address the safety of students and teachers in our public schools,” Dorman said.

“It is reprehensible to think that every day the state fails to act on placing storm shelters in public schools, we put the lives of more than a half a million children, teachers and school staff in peril.”

The committee studying the shelter issue will meet for the first time at the end of October.

The study is being used by the group Take Shelter Oklahoma to recruit more signatures for their petition to get a proposition to fund school shelters on a statewide ballot in November 2014.
