Minor Earthquakes Rattle Payne County

Posted: Updated:

Minor earthquakes rattle parts of central Oklahoma this week.

If you live west of Tulsa and thought you felt the ground move Tuesday and early Wednesday, you weren't dreaming.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported two very minor quakes in Payne County.

The first, measuring at 3.3 on the Richter scale, hit around 8:30 Tuesday evening between Stillwater and Yale. A much smaller quake happened early Wednesday around 1:00am. It measured 2.7 and was centered just west of Cushing.

Fortunately, we've heard of no damage reports. This area has seen another rise in small quakes over the last few weeks.

Monitoring of America's seismic activity is limited right now due to the stalemate in Washington, D.C.

The government shutdown has forced many geological survey and NOAA workers off the job for more than a week now.
