2103 Ford Award Week 7 Nominee

Posted: Updated:
"Hi I'm Ben Johnson, wide receiver at Sapulpa #15. A fun fact about me is I'm a lifeguard during the summers and I love staying out there and tanning."

Ben didn't start the year on anybodies top-100 players list, but he has quickly emerged has one of the state's best receivers.  He ranks first in Oklahoma in touchdown catches and total yards.  He's reached the endzone 15-times and and racked up over 880-yards.

"I played quarterback my whole life so I moved to wide receiver just last year. I really liked it. I had a decent year last year and then this year I focused all summer on catching the ball and learning my routes." said Ben, "Really trying to get better at that. I think it's really paid off this year. I wouldn't say I came out of nowhere, but if you'd ask my teammates I believe they'd tell you they thought I'd be pretty good."

If Ben was a surprise to people before, he's not anymore.  He's definitely on his opponents radar, but despite all the attention he continues put up big numbers week in and week out.

"There is no secret who our weapon is and so even with that and the types of teams that we're playing in this district, they bracket him, they double team him, they try to jam him at the line of scrimmage, he's still making plays. To me that's an indicator of an exceptional player too." said Sapulpa head football coach Mike Gottsch.

Ben also plays safety for the Chieftains and he's picked off two passes from opposing quarterbacks this year as well.

Ben Johnson is your week seven, Ford Award Nominee.
