Larry Coker Makes His Return To Tulsa

Posted: Updated:
Larry Coker maybe the head coach of the University of Texas in San Antonio, but he is as Oklahoma as you can get.  The 65-year-old was born in Okemah, OK in 1948.  He was a defensive back from 1966-1969 at Northeastern State before beginning his head coaching career at Fairfax High School in 1971.  He then spent two seasons as the head coach in Claremore High School.

Coker quickly made it to the college ranks.  In 1979 he became the quarterbacks coach at Tulsa for senior quarterback Bill Blankenship.  Blankenship, the now head coach of the University of Tulsa stopped short of calling this weekend's game with Coker's UTSA team, a treat.  But it will be special for the former student to face off with his former teacher.

"I remember seeing this man watching us in spring practice and knowing he was a local coach and the next thing you know is he's been hired to coach the quarterbacks." said Blankenship, "I'm going into my fifth year at Tulsa.  Coach Coker was humble enough to know that in a lot of ways that I probably knew the Tulsa offense better than he did when he first came.  But it didn't take long for me to figure out that he had a lot to teach me."

Coach Coker not only coached at Tulsa, but he's also coached at both Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma.

UTSA and Tulsa will face off this Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium at 2:30pm
