Dive Teams Suspend Efforts to Remove Sunken Cars in Rogers County

Posted: Updated:

State troopers have suspended efforts this week to recover sunken vehicles in an area of Rogers County.

Dive teams with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol began the efforts earlier this week. It took place in the McClellan-Kerr Navigation channel near Inola.

OHP Capt. George Brown said the decision to suspend the operation is due to several conditions - including nearly concrete-like silt surrounding some vehicles, some vehicles being submerged at distances that wreckers are not equipped to recover and underwater debris that makes it unsafe for divers.

According to a report from the Associated Press, Brown says OHP's Marine Enforcement Rescue and Recovery unit will work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to bring in heavy equipment at a later date to recover the vehicles using a Corps barge equipped with a side lift crane to make lifting the vehicles easier and safer.

Earlier this week teams used air bags to lift a 2000, red Chevrolet truck. They hooked up the truck with cables to different towing vehicles to remove it from the water. It took about two hours and 20 minutes.

OHP ran the truck's information and confirmed that it is registered as stolen. Broken Arrow Police Department had been investigating the case. It went missing September 4, 2006.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
