President Spends Thanksgiving Calling Military Members, With Family

Posted: Updated:

President Barack Obama has been spending a portion of his Thanksgiving Day calling members of the military to thank them for their service.

White House officials stated that Obama called 10 service members: two from the Army, two from the Marine Corps, two from the Navy, two from the Air Force and two from the Coast Guard.

And on Wednesday Obama pardoned two turkeys before a group of reporters and photographers. Both turkeys, named Popcorn and Caramel, were the lucky birds whose lives were spared -- and they'll go on display at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate for the next several weeks.

In a holiday edition of his weekend radio and Internet address, Obama gives thanks for members of the military, their families, and the sacrifices they make. He also expresses gratitude for the freedoms the military defends, including speech, religion and the right to choose America's leaders.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
