Tulsa Police Release Results of DUI Crackdown

Posted: Updated:

Local law enforcement officers are cracking down on drunk drivers this weekend. Tulsa Police Officers arrested six people for driving under the influence. The Tulsa Police Department were out overnight Saturday to watch for drunk drivers, but that's not all they look for.

"There are other things: people without a license, people not wearing a seat belt, people without insurance, maybe some warrants, so it's more than just the primary idea. Lets check and make sure we don't have a drunk driver, lets also make sure that people are driving legally," TPD, Traffic Safety Coordinator, Officer Craig Murray said.

Officers will be near I-44 at 31st street checking for everything, and there is a certain reason officers picked that location.

"We have been having a lot of crime in this area particularly in the hotel triangle we call it," TPD Corporal Will Dalsing said, "We are seeing a lot of burglaries from vehicle and then a lot of drug trafficking and some prostitution. It's just a lot of hotels and motels, many of them are fairly inexpensive, people coming and going and they will stay there for days maybe even weeks at a time."

Officers wrote 57 citations for things like no insurance or drivers license. They made nine arrests, one for an outstanding warrant and the six for DUI, one for public intoxication, and one for possession and AFCF. Officers stopped every fifth car and when the three bays were full they let all drivers through the area.

"We are not taking the right away from people to have a good time. We do want to take their right of getting out there behind the wheel if they have been drinking," Murray said.

With this checkpoint, officers now know who is coming through the area and hope it will help with crime rates.

"Crime in any condensed area that we can keep track, it we are going to go and just swarm to it," Dalsing said.
