Road Conditions: Caution Needed on Slick County Roads

Posted: Updated:
Snow in McAlester. Snow in McAlester.

Highways and Interstates in the Tulsa area are mostly clear with some slick spots, but County roads remain a concern, as many still have significant snow and ice coverage, ODOT reports.

All roads, including interstate 40, remain ice covered in Okmulgee County. Travel is still discouraged because of the risks of sliding off roadways and becoming stuck. With temperatures remaining below freezing, the risking for hypothermia and injuries remain a threat.

Roadways in Payne County and neighboring counties are still slick in spots. The U.S./State Highways, interstates and the Cimarron Turnpike area are clear.

Drivers traveling from Oklahoma County and other central counties should exercise caution on bridges and overpasses. Secondary roadways and city streets appear slick and hazardous in many areas.

If travel cannot be avoided, use extreme caution when venturing out.

ODOT crews are applying sand and salt to bridges and roadways.

Tips for Driving in Winter Weather

  • Check road conditions before getting out on the roads.
  • Stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles, so there is adequate distance for braking in wet and icy conditions.
  • Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway, but is actually a thin layer of ice.
  • Please be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time to reach destinations
