Icy Roads Forcing School Closures

Posted: Updated:

While the main roads in Jenks and communities around the area were, for the most part, clear with few hazards for drivers Monday, the side streets were still iced over from the snowfall of the past week.

This left the streets slick and unsafe, leading many schools to close.

"When you have buses trying to navigate those secondary streets, it can be a safety issue for our students," said Willie Braggs with Jenks Public Schools. He emphasized that students were just safer staying at home Monday and, for now, they are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

Steve Oakley with the city of Jenks echoed the school system's position, saying, it all depends on the weather.

"I noticed in one of the weather forecasts, we might have a chance of more precipitation today, so that depends," Oakley said. He added that the city has road maintenance crews working all day Monday to get those iced over streets cleared, but what falls from the sky Monday night will make all the difference. "If it's freezing precipitation - freezing rain, sleet - that might delay things further. But if it's more snow and our sand trucks continue to work and our scrapers and stuff, then hopefully, by tomorrow. But that's a decision for the school district."

Jenks Public Schools, along with several other area school systems, have canceled classes for Tuesday.
