Kids and Ice: A Dangerous Combination

Posted: Updated:

"The equipment on the dive team is freezing up," said Charles Downum of the Claremore police department.

The missing? A 15 year-old Claremore teen who may have fallen victim to thin ice.

"This is our belief, just walking on the pond and fell through the ice," he said.

Potentially, a tragic replay of what happened in Tulsa over the weekend.

"He was under the ice when we located him," said TFD official Dale Cooley.

A six year-old boy, playing on an ice covered creek when it gave way.

"The ice broke and I guess he fell in," said one bystander.

Firefighters raced the child to an ambulance, but the efforts were in vain. Two horrific scenarios driving home the danger of ice in Oklahoma.

"In this part of the country we need to let people know we don't have the type of temperatures that make it safe for people to be on the ice. It's just not safe in Oklahoma," said Cooley.

"Definitely not thick enough to be walking on," said Downum.
