Local non-profit adds former District of Columbia mayor to its Board to help change the life trajectory of underserved high school students
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Genesys Works – Bay Area, the San Francisco-based office of national non-profit Genesys Works, recently announced that former DC mayor Adrian Fenty has joined its local Board of Directors. Genesys Works helps underserved teens break the cycle of poverty by helping them get on a professional career track through real-world skills training followed by a yearlong internship during their senior year of high school.
"What impressed me about Genesys Works is that they are providing a real and tangible path for underserved teens to enter the economic mainstream," remarks Fenty. "I am excited to be a part of an organization that will have such significant impact in both education and business."
Adrian Fenty served as the fifth Mayor of the District of Columbia from January 2007 – January 2011 where he championed unprecedented initiatives to tackle challenges facing the Nation's Capital. A visionary with intense focus on reform, Fenty became a recognized national leader in the areas of urban education reform, public safety, public housing, economic revitalization, healthcare and tourism, all during the most dramatic economic downturn since the Great Depression. Since leaving office, Fenty has provided strategic advice and business development solutions to an array of clients. He has served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Politics at his alma mater, Oberlin College and received his JD from Howard University School of Law.
Fenty joins a board of esteemed colleagues from the corporate world, including Accenture, AT&T, and PG&E, as well as members with not-for-profit and education backgrounds. The local office of Genesys Works began operation in early 2013, and had its first cohort of students complete their training and enter internships in September.
