A man who shot several of his classmates, killing one and injuring three others, has been sentenced to life without parole.

Mark Hopkins, 42,  pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced today in Tulsa County District Court. He tearfully apologized to the victim's families.

Joseph and Elnora Borders are the parents of Chaz Fain. He is the man that Hopkins fatally shot. Both parents addressed the courtroom before sentencing.

Joseph Borders began by saying, "Mr. Hopkins, you took my son's life."

Elnora Borders looked Hopkins in the eye and told him she loved him. She spoke about how Fain was the first of her children to attend college. He had aspirations to acquire a good job after school. She hugged Hopkins' mother after addressing the court.

"We don't hate his family. We do not hate his family. We love his family. We don't believe he was raised that way," Fain's father told Channel 8.

Hopkins was arrested in February at the Landings Apartment complex next to the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology. Prosecutors say he shot four individuals, killing one. Prosecutors said Hopkins began a game of heads or tails and then opened fire.

Police said that everyone involved in the shooting knew each other through class work.

Kyle Goodknight spoke to the court, saying many of the men thought of Hopkins as a mentor. Goodknight wrestled the gun out of Hopkins' hands. He said he does not care to know what Hopkins' motive was but believes justice was served.

"I mean he's going to pay for what happened to him, and he can live with his motive for the rest of his life," Goodknight said.

Hopkins' brother also addressed the court. He said he is very sorry for the victims' families. He is an educator and said he has seen many instances of undiagnosed and untreated illnesses. A medical expert had examined Hopkins before trial and did not find any cognitive problems. He told Channel 8 after the proceeding that his family would continue to pray for those affected.

Hopkins' mother addressed the court, saying her son had misdemeanors but would not hurt a fly.

Prosecutors Kali Strain and Phillip Peak said the judge handed down the maximum sentences for each of six counts. The life sentences are to be served consecutively.

"The families and the victims are very pleased with the verdict and we feel that justice was served for what they went through," Strain said.
