Mary Anne’s Kid-Friendly Popcorn Balls

Posted: Updated:

These popcorn balls are so easy to make that even a young child with adult supervision can have a lot of fun making them. The marshmallows make them similar to Rice Krispie Treats that are so popular with adults and children alike. Made with marshmallows, these popcorn balls are sweet, crispy, and chewy.

12 cups popped popcorn

4 cups miniature marshmallows

Or

20 large marshmallows

1/4 cup butter

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1/4 teaspoon salt

M & M’s, optional

Mini chocolate chips, optional

  • Pop the popcorn. Scoop or pour popcorn into a large bowl to get rid of kernels and burned bits at the bottom.
  • Melt butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Stir in marshmallows, vanilla, and salt and cook until marshmallows are melted, stirring constantly. Pour marshmallow mixture over popcorn and mix with spoon to coat evenly. Add candy, if using, and mix well again with wooden spoon.
  • Let mixture cool slightly. Smear butter on your hands or spray with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Shape popcorn into balls with your hands. Place on sheets of waxed paper; let stand until firm.

Makes approximately 8 popcorn balls.

Note: Experiment with various kinds of candy. You can also add food coloring to color the popcorn balls.
