Jennifer's Spread the Warmth Blanket Drive Launches, Helps People with Homes Too

Posted: Updated:
South Tulsa - Jennifer's Spread the Warmth Blanket Drive launched Thursday. Blanket recipients are awaiting donations as cold weather continues in the area.

Oklahoma's Volunteers of America are hoping to gather a record-breaking 5,000 blankets for those in the community that need them. That includes some people with homes.

"Not everyone can afford a blanket. A lot of people are on a fixed income, a very low income, or are a part of the working poor," said Monica Champ with VOA. She said many people have not had a home for long or they may have been recently displaced. She said some struggle to afford to heat their homes.

"I had barely nothing at all at the time, in money, and then they supported me with the blanket," said Garry Stanger. He had previously struggled with homelessness. A few years ago, the extreme cold made him ill and put him in a hospital bed. VOA helped him get back on his feet and find an apartment.

Stanger's case manager, John Bierman, said Stanger pays a portion of his rent but VOA helps him pay his bills. He has a heated apartment but still has a need for a blanket.

"It is a big deal. It's the difference between being cold and comfortable. You know, that's a big deal for anybody," Bierman said.

Stanger is one of 44 people in VOA's permanent supportive housing. Jennifer's Spread the Warmth Blanket Drive also helps many people in the area dealing with homelessness.

Last year, the blanket drive brought in 4,750 blankets.
