Two Officer Involved Shootings in One Week

Posted: Updated:

The blue Ford had been reported stolen early Thursday morning.

"Officers spotted that vehicle, began a traffic stop on it," said Corporal Michael Mahan of the Muskogee police department.

As the two officers tried to take the occupants into custody say police, one of the passengers went on the offensive.

"That passenger attempted to disarm one of our officers and he was subsequently shot by the backing officer on the scene," said Mahan.

Just two days into 2014, and the second officer involved shooting of the new year.

"Our deputy then had to return fire, and fatally wounded the suspect," said Mayes County Sheriff Michael Reed.

That happened at 1:30 in the morning New Year's Day. A deputy responded to a call dispatched as suicidal, and was met, says the sheriff, with a hail of bullets.

"He didn't have no choice, he had to return fire to protect his life," said Reed.

Both incidents highlight the constantly unpredictable nature of law enforcement.

"We never know what we're going to encounter," said Mahan.

We shootings do occur, they're handed over to the OSBI.

"When you have an officer involved shooting, we lock the scene down immediately, get OSBI, turn it over to them to investigate it," said Reed.

Danger in the line of duty, a lurking territory that comes with the job.

"Never anything routine in our business, we always have to be sort of in that yellow zone, we can't ever be green," said Mahan.
