Miami Police Department Looking for New Headquarters

Posted: Updated:

Officials with the Miami Police Department are hoping to relocate to a different building.

Overcrowding and lack of space are among some of the issues the agency has to deal with on an everyday basis. And that's especially true when you take into account that the building also houses the Ottawa County 911 center.

Miami PD Chief George Haralson told KTUL that the current building was built between 1959 and 1965. Back then their staff was a lot smaller than it is now.

"When you're talking about a 911 center that is only 132 square feet and sometimes three dispatchers it's cramped," Haralson added. "It's not designed...for modern day law enforcement."

Haralson said all the Miami PD is hoping for is more square footage and a floor plan that is more conducive to their daily operations. He added that there are a few vacant buildings in the town that they are looking to possible move into.

But it will only be after meetings with the City of Miami to determine when they can begin the process.
