State Senator Files 'Piers Morgan' Gun Law

An Oklahoma state senator has proposed a bill that would allow citizens to carry firearms without a license. The bill was ironically named after a popular CNN anchor and gun control proponent.

State Senator Nathan Dahm filed Senate Bill 1473 or the "Piers Morgan Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms Without Infringement Act," which would allow "law-abiding citizens" to carry firearms without a license. The bill is an effort to "reaffirm Oklahomans' Second Amendment rights," according to a press release.

According to the release, any person 18 years or older would be able to open carry loaded or unloaded handguns, rifles and shotguns without a license. Currently, Oklahomans are required to have a license to openly or conceal carry a handgun.

"The Second Amendment says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, and yet when we require our citizens to jump through hoops, pay fees and undergo a process that presumes they're guilty of something until proven otherwise, their rights are being infringed upon," Dahm said in the release.

Dahm told KTUL that safety was not a major concern.

"They said the same thing about when we passed open-carry, that it was going to be the wild west, that there was going to be blood in the streets and we haven't seen that happen," Dahm said. "In fact, an armed society is a polite society."

Schools and government facilities, as well as other locations where guns are prohibited, would continue to be off-limits for firearms. The bill would still require gun owners to have the firearm in a holster, case or sling designed for carrying the weapon.

Dahm named the bill after Piers Morgan, who has been vocal on stricter gun control measures.

"I was kind of like going after two birds with one stone, so to speak. I was going to be filing the bill anyways. One thing that I've seen is that a lot of times people will name bills almost the exact opposite of its intent," Dahm said. "I kind of see the irony in naming these acts different things, so I thought, what better way, what better name than to come up with somebody that is very for even stricter gun control to actually loosen our gun control."

Morgan invited Dahm, on Twitter, to debate the bill on his show Piers Morgan Live.

"Hi Senator @NathanDahm - come on my show and debate your new 'Piers Morgan Act'. If you have the guts," Morgan tweeted this afternoon.

In an interview this afternoon, Dahm said he would be taking Morgan up on his offer and will be on Piers Morgan Live on Monday.
