Bill May Ban E-Cigarette Use by Minors

Posted: Updated:

The Oklahoma House of Representatives is considering redefining a bill that would fight the use of e-cigarettes by minors.

The reasoning for the bill, according to state Representative Pat Ownbey and state Senator Frank Simpson, is that nicotine delivery devices such as e-cigarettes contain tobacco and nicotine.

"Our legislation extends our current tobacco laws that deal with minors to e-cigarette devices," Ownbey said in a press release from the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Simpson said that an update to the current bill banning tobacco use by minors is just an adjustment as new products such as e-cigarettes have come to the market.

"We do know that nicotine is an addictive substance and that young people's brains are more vulnerable to these type of substances than a mature adult," Simpson said. "The vapor market has grown very quickly and we want to make sure that young people are not part of its customer base."
