The people of Skiatook are still coming to terms with a shocking double murder that happened over the course of two days.
"I was shocked, because this is a small town - we don't have that kind of crime here," Celia Lanham said. Skiatook residents like her were still reeling Wednesday from the events of the past 48 hours.
Esther Driskell, 71, was found dead on Monday and, only a few hours later, her 16-year-old granddaughter's body was discovered in an abandoned van near Skiatook Lake. Investigators say, they were both stabbed to death. Relative, Devin Stanley, 19, was arrested a short time later.
"If the one that they have in custody did it, he needs to be held accountable and pay with his life," said one local resident.
Classes went on, as usual, Wednesday at Skiatook High School where the girl went to school.
People all over town, including those who did not know the victims, echoed condolences to the family and to the teenagers who lost a friend in such an unthinkable way.
"One of my grandkids - the young lady that was killed was one of their friends and so, it's just unbelievable that in a little town like this, that something like that can happen," Lanham said.
"I think it's better just to talk to your friends - I think the more you talk about it, the better, and I know that they have a big support system [at the high school] and I know that everybody will be involved in supporting the family," said Stephanie Upton of Skiatook.
The suspect is still in custody and police say the investigation is ongoing.
