McAlester Braces for More Winter Weather

Posted: Updated:

McAlester's city crews and school administrators are keeping an eye on winter weather possibly heading into the area Sunday.

Areas south of I-40 could receive the brunt of it. Public Works Director John Modzelewski said his employees are ready to respond-- despite the storm's unfortunate timing.

"They know it's coming from the southwest, and unfortunately, they're predicting something around the start of the Super Bowl, so they've got Super Bowl plans," Modzelewski said. He said residents with Super Bowl plans should consider staying in if the roads are slick.

The city has three salt trucks and one large snow plow. There is another vehicle that has snow plow capabilities. After the winter storm in December, the city ordered an additional plow. It has not yet arrived, but Modzelewski said there are backup resources if need be.

Another Public Works employee said there are six semi-loads of salt available for treating the roads.

Modzelewski said the relatively nice weather leading up to Sunday will likely keep the ground warm. That could make road treatments easier.

One resident told Channel 8, she aims to be ready for winter weather all season long. That means keeping water and food at home and making sure her elderly relatives are taken care of.

"If you're really prepared for it, and you think ahead, you're okay. Not like the people in Atlanta," said resident Carolyn McNatt.

McAlester School District administrators are aware of the possibility of winter weather. Superintendent Marsha Gore said safety is the district's primary concern. She said she and other employees drive the roads before students wake up to see if they are safe for travel. They also take other precautions.

"We have our own salt, ice melt that we put down and we've been doing that today. We've had our custodians come to our maintenance area and they've been picking up salt. We want to make sure we have plenty there," Gore said.

She said if there are any class cancellations, they will be announced by 6 a.m.
